Continuing down the shaded trail we encounter a large enclosure. A pair of sharp eyes follow us from a platform just a few metres above the ground. Was that a growl or a purr ? These huge cats are the western Canadian subspecies of cougar or puma ( Felis concolor ). Cougars are the largest species of cats found in Canada, males weigh between 40 and 85 kg and can be 1.5 to 2.7 m long.
