The piping plover Charadrius melodus was listed as Endangered in May 2001. Only about forty breeding pairs of Piping Plovers remain dispersed throughout Nova Scotia. Deterioration of nesting habitat due to natural events, human alteration of their beach habitat, human disturbance during the nesting period, and predation on eggs and young by birds and mammals are the major reasons for the decline of this species.
